Winter Closure and IRB Meeting Dates Reminder

The Revised Common Rule went into effect January 21, 2019. The Common Rule, the federal human research protections regulations, was revised for the first time since being promulgated in 1991. The revisions are extensive and you can read the entirety of it online. Read the UNM IRB's Transition memo for detailed information about UNM IRB’s transition to the new regulations. Please review this document and contact our office with any questions. Note that if you have a currently approved project with an expiration date, that expiration date is still in effect until the IRB reviews the project under the new regulations.

Forms, templates, and policies have been updated to reflect the Revised Common Rule. It is important that you download the most current versions of IRB submission documents to prevent delays in the review process. When submitting new packages to the IRB, always obtain forms and templates from the IRB Library.

New OIRB Staff

We would like to welcome Tyler Greening to our office as our IRB Coordinator. Tyler recently graduated with her B.S. in Psychology from Champlain College and we are thrilled to have her as part of our team!

December Full Board Meeting

The December IRB meeting will be held, if needed, on Monday, December 17, 2018.  The agenda for this meeting closes tomorrow, 12/5/2018.  The January meeting will be held at the usual time on Wednesday, 1/23/19.

Holiday Closures

The UNM OIRB will be closed for winter break starting December 21, 2018 and will re-open on January 1, 2019.  Please note that no submissions will be reviewed during the break so plan accordingly.  If IRB approval for your project expires during winter break, remember to submit a complete Continuing Review or Closure submission at least 30 days prior to the expiration date.  Note that if a project’s IRB approval expires, all research activity must stop. Failure to comply is considered noncompliance with UNM policies and federal regulations as applicable.

Conflict of Interest Disclosures

Please remember that it is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator to ensure that all project team members submit annual COI disclosures through the UNM COI Office.  The disclosure must be submitted and reviewed prior to the individual participating in human research activities.  This will be verified by OIRB staff at the time of initial submission and continuing review of the project.

Thank you, be safe and enjoy the holidays!!
