Revised Policy on Scientific/Department Review
Effective 5/1/17, the UNM IRB has modified its requirements related to the scientific review of human subject research. Previously, the “department review” was conducted by the Department Chair or designee. The requirement for scientific review of new studies being submitted to the IRB can now be met in one of the following ways:
- Review by the department chair/center director/designee in which the Principal Investigator (PI) is administratively located for purposes of leading or supervising the research (same as previous policy);
- For graduate student thesis or dissertation research, review by the student’s dissertation or master’s thesis committee chair (if allowed by the department – please check with your department chair);
- For externally funded research, documented (scored) peer review. A copy of the notification of peer review by funder must be submitted as a supporting document.
The former “Department Review” form has now been replaced with the “Scientific Review” form (available in the IRB Library). Please contact our office with any questions.
New Guidance on Research with Prisoners
The OIRB has issued a guidance for conducting human research with incarcerated individuals. This guidance provides the regulatory definition of “prisoner”, the types of research that can be conducted with prisoners as well as project team responsibilities associated with the conduct of prisoner research. The UNM IRB currently has three prisoner advocates who serve on the IRB and assist with the review of prisoner research. You may also find the guidance on the OIRB website at: http://irb.unm.edu/?q=oirb-policy
OIRB Summer Office Hours
Please note that the OIRB maintains standard office hours during the summer months (Mon – Fri 8am – 5pm). We will not, however, be holding regular office hours in the GPSA office during this time.
The OIRB website is getting a facelift! We hope to launch the new site in early June 2017. Watch for upcoming announcements as we work to create a new customer service focused website for researchers, IRB members, and study participants!
